Biography of Illinois State Senator William Delgado



Illinois State Senator William (Willie) Delgado has served in the General Assembly since 1998.


In 2009, Senator Delgado was appointed Chairman of the Senate Public Health Committee, and has since worked as the Chairman to expand access to health care for people throughout Illinois. Specifically, he has worked to fulfill his commitment to ensure that everyone has access to Community Health Centers throughout the state.


Senator Delgado has also been instrumental in passing legislation, Senate Bill 3539, that eliminated the Death Penalty in Illinois. He has worked with the Senate President and his colleagues to pass the Illinois DREAM Conimission Act, Senate Bill 2185. He has also fought for the working people by ensuring everyone is paid the wage they earned through the passage of Senate Bill 3568.


Senator Delgado has also been a leader in working to helped bridge the way between Humans Services, Public Health and Public Safety.


In addition to serving as Chairman of the Public Health Committee, he also serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Executive Appointments Committees, and is a member of the Human Services and Appropriations I Committees.


In addition to the Senate standing committees, Senator Delgado has been appointed to the of General Assembly's Advisory Committee on Medicaid, the School Success Task Force, the Racial and Ethnic Impact Research Task Force‚ and the Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Task Force.


To better serve his community and the people of Illinois Senator Delgado is pleased to announce that he has been appointed to the Human Services Commission Advisory Panel by Governor Pat Quinn. Senator Delgado is also serving on the Illinois State Health lmprovement Plan (SHIP) planning team, as weil as the Disproportionate Justice Impact Study Commission.


Senator Delgado has been a community activist all of his life and has worked to help bring family justice during the controversial Rolando Cruz and Alejandro Hernandez case. Whiie a parole agent, he worked in the attorney general's office when these cases were reexamined.


Throughout his years of public service Senator Delgado has received many honors and acknowledgements for his work on behalf of his constituents and the people of Illinois. He has been honored by the Community Behavioral Health Association as their Legislator of the Year for his commitment over his career to inclusive community health, eliminating health care disparities, and building a world class linguisticaliy and culturally competent health care workforce in Illinois.


Senator Delgado has also been recognized by the Raise Illinois Coalition and received their Leadership Award for dedication to working families in their campaign to raise the Minimum Wage.


The Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty has also acknowledged Senator Deigado for his leadership and support of the repeal of the death penalty.


Senator Delgado has been honored by the Illinois Aicoholism and Drug Dependence Association for his work to ensure that those who are facing addiction have resources available, such as healthcare and rehabilitation, through their insurance providers.


Senator Delgado has also consistently participated in the Annual Autism Awareness Day as weil as in local Unity and Anti-Violence Marches in the Chicago Area.


The 2nd Legislative District is comprised mainly of the Chicago neighborhoods of Belmont Cragin, Logan Square and Hermosa. He also represents portions of the Austin, Dunning, Hermosa, Humboldt Park, Montclare and Portage Park communities.
